Although recognized as heroes of the global food system, small family farmers produce more than a third of the world’s food. Farmers around the world depend on family farms as the backbone of rural economies. In sub-Saharan Africa, where up to 80% of agriculture is carried out by smallholder farmers, agriculture contributes 23% to regional Gross Domestic Product. However, the latter are paradoxically the biggest victims of climate change, as confirmed by a recent AFA report revealing that these small producers receive only 0.3% of international climate financing. From a broader perspective, this report presents an analysis of international public climate finance flows carried out by Climate Focus.
