Africa’s position in the global knowledge production ecosystem requires significant change. It is crucial for African knowledge systems, languages, actors, and institutions to have a rightful place in global thought processes, which will contribute to upholding African dignity. The current global ecosystem of knowledge production is plagued with injustices and inequities deeply rooted in its orientations, institutions, policies, legal frameworks, and practices. Although commendable initiatives have emerged to address these challenges through equitable partnerships between Africa and the global North, they have mostly dealt with superficial symptoms rather than addressing the fundamental layers of inequities in global research. Existing frameworks focus on altering the unequal distribution of labor and resources, addressing capacity gaps, ensuring research accessibility, and crediting researchers, but these efforts have not fully resolved the inequalities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new approaches for identifying the problem and proposing potential policies.
