Africa is facing a food crisis of unprecedented scale. Millions of people are at risk of worsening hunger in the near future due to the impact of the war in Ukraine, combined with the devastating effects of conflict, climate change, economic recessions and the after-effects of COVID-19. In this context, social and gender inequalities are also increasing, with women and girls being among the most affected by these shocks. This is what FAO reveals in its latest report covering the year 2023. This report presents an updated analysis of the prevalence and trends of undernourishment, food insecurity and malnutrition. In addition, it includes, for the first time, estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy eating, which are useful indicators of individuals’ economic access to nutritious foods and healthy diets.
