Article - Which Countries Are Most Vulnerable To Locust Swarms?

Depuis octobre 2019, des essaims massifs du criquet pèlerin vorace endommagent les cultures et les pâturages et paralysent les communautés de la Grande Corne de l’Afrique, de la péninsule arabique et de l’Asie du Sud-Ouest. Suite aux cyclones et aux pluies abondantes, qui créent un terrain favorable à la reproduction des criquets, l’Organisation des Nations unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) a averti que les effectifs des criquets pourraient être multipliés par 20 dans les mois à venir sans mesures de lutte plus strictes. Massive swarms of the voracious desert locust have been damaging crops and pastures and crippling communities in the Greater Horn of Africa, Arabian Peninsula and Southwest Asia since October 2019. Following cyclones and widespread rainfall, which create a favorable breeding ground for locusts, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization warned that locust numbers could grow another 20 times over the coming months without stronger control measures. More broadly, the article presents several maps on food and nutrition security in Africa.
